Ceramics Firing Techniques 2
Building upon Ceramic Firing Techniques 1, students will explore in depth various non-traditional firing techniques and the artistic and cultural history behind each technique. Firing techniques covered are Raku, sawdust firings, salt glazing, wood firing, the use of saggars at different temperatures, vapor glazes and primitive pit kilns, luster firings, majolica and other low temperature techniques. Surface treatments to pots that enhance the uniqueness of the firing are stressed. Students have the opportunity to build kilns and manage firings themselves as well as the opportunity to participate in a wood firing.
